Introduction Parents are an important part of children's occupational therapy. Evidence about parents' views and expectations is important for improving the quality of service delivery from parents' point of view. International studies of community health services for children with disabilities suggest that parents' satisfaction with services is associated with respectful and supportive care, professionals' competence, availability of the service, sharing of general information and family-centred service provision (Rosenbaum et al 1998, King et al 1999, 2001). Family-centred service provision (Rosenbaum et al 1998) involves professionals acknowledging that parents know their children best; families are unique and different; and optimal child functioning occurs within a supportive family and community context. This acknowledgement is displayed through therapists' behaviours, such as encouraging family members' participation, acting respectfully and empowering parents by providing information and support.
